Fined $50,000 by NBA, Nets’ Kyrie Irving will also forfeit more than $800,000

The NBA fined Kyrie Irving $50,000, and the Brooklyn Nets guard will also forfeit $816,889 for the two games he was out during a league-imposed five-day quarantine for violating the league’s health and safety protocols.

The league’s COVID-10 protocols “prohibit attending indoor social gatherings of 15 or more people or entering bars, lounges, clubs or similar establishments. … The violation occurred when he attended a private indoor party last weekend,” the NBA said in a news release.

Video posted on social media captured a maskless Irving at his sister’s birthday. Irving has missed the Nets’ past five games, and the team does not know when he will return.

“Without a doubt the organization is disappointed with not having any one of our players — in this particular case Kyrie — not amongst us, not in the trenches with us,” Nets general manager Sean Marks said. “So I don’t want to speculate and say why he’s out. I’ve had conversations with him and I’ll continue to have conversations. We look forward to him being back in the gym where he’ll address this and we’ll sit down with him.” The league said Irving can rejoin the team on Saturday as long as he returns a negative test, but it is unknown if he will. If Irving is back, the Nets could field a starting lineup that includes Irving, Kevin Durant and James Harden against Orlando on Saturday.

On Wednesday, the Nets acquired Harden in a blockbuster trade that involved Houston, Cleveland and Indiana.
