Boston Celtics bags Josh Richardson in their roster

The Boston Celtics took several steps on Friday to reorganize their roster by leaving center Tristan Thompson and bringing back three players: point guard Chris Dunn and Atlanta Hawks center Bruno Fernando and Dallas point guard Josh Richardson. In the first deal, Thompson signed with the Sacramento Kings. Point guard Deron Wright left Sacramento for Atlanta. Dunn and Fernando landed in Boston.

Late Friday, Boston reached another deal with a source. The source confirmed that the Celtics used the remaining trade immunity created by the signing and transaction agreement to take over Richardson from the Mavericks, and sent Gordon Hayward to the Charlotte Hornets in November.

Boston now has 13 players with full guarantee contracts for next season. According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, their guarantee funds are around $3.2 million below the dollar’s luxury tax limit of 136.6 million in the 2021-22 season. The Celtics are moving to a vacant agency next week, and have at least one major decision: to add back point guard Evan Fournier, whom they acquired in March in the hours before the trade deadline. With his current membership, Fournier’s re-signing will push the Celtics into a luxury tax for the next season.

Richardson will be at the age of 28 in September, he will play for his fourth team after an unsuccessful season with the Philadelphia 76ers and Mavericks. A few years ago, Richardson was struggling to find a place in the Philadelphia roster. Then in the November 2020 NBA draft after trading Seth Curry at the conference, Richardson averaged 12.1 points per game in Dallas, but he tied his career-low, with 33.33 percent shooting accuracy from the 3-pointer line.

Richardson, who owns the player pick for the 2021-22 season, will exercise this as the right to continue to comply with this agreement.

The contracts of the five players will expire at the end of the 2021-22 season. Richardson will earn $11.6 million next season; Thompson will be having $9.7 million; Wright will receive 8.5 million US dollars; Dunn’s income will be just over 5 million US dollars, and Fernando’s income will be 1.7 million US dollars.
