PlayStation Network (PSN) is a digital media entertainment service provided by Sony Interactive Entertainment. PSN was released in November 2006. It was originally designed for PlayStation video game consoles but soon expanded to include smartphones, tablets, Blu-ray players, and high-definition TVs. As of April 2016, more than 110 million users have been recorded, of which 109 million were active monthly at the end of March 2021. The PlayStation Network service is dedicated to the online market (PlayStation Store), which is a premium subscription service used to enhance the service. Games and social functions (PlayStation Plus), movie streaming, free rental and purchase (PlayStation Video), music streaming (PlayStation Music, powered by Spotify), and cloud gaming service (PlayStation Now). The service is available in 73 regions. One of the services amongst the Playstation Network is a PS Plus subscription that allows gamers to access and play video games online along with a number of additional features and free games every month!
According to reports, PlayStation Plus on PS4 and PS5 is getting a major update from Sony, but this comes at a price. In April, we broadcast a report from a well-known industry member that PlayStation will use animation and PlayStation Plus to create a subscription service similar to Xbox Game Pass. Fast forward a few months, and now another report echoes these statements. Last night, Sony finalized the acquisition of Crunchyroll. In the animation industry, this is good news. For games, it doesn’t make any sense, at least on the surface. When the transaction was completed, Sony stated that its goal was to create a “unified” subscription service between Funimation and Crunchyroll. What does this have to do with games and PlayStation Plus? Well, according to Eurogamer, Sony plans to use Crunchyroll with PlayStation Plus as a premium version of PlayStation Plus, currently charging $60 per year. Now, when the initial report was released, not only this recommendation was made. This is happening, but the package can also include movies and TV.
The leaker Nick Baker compared the subscription service with Apple One. For now, it remains to be seen whether this will produce any results. Eurogamer’s own report uses “potential”. In other words, more and more smoke is forming, and there is usually a fire where there is smoke. As of press time, Sony has not commented on this in any way. Sony generally does not comment on rumors, reports, leaks or speculations, so we don’t expect this to change, but if it changes for any reason, we will definitely update the story accordingly. At the same time, bring a grain of salt with everything here.
